Hi, my name is Brett Harlan the founder, owner and hands and feet of Thrive at Home KC. I began Thrive at Home KC out of a desire to fill the gaps in healthcare while combining my personal and professional passions. You see, during my senior year of high school, I survived a fatal motorcycle accident where I broke my neck in 2 places, my pelvis, and my arm. During my recovery, I began to reanalyze what it was I wanted to do with my life, previously considering architecture.
In college then, I job shadowed occupational therapists as well as social workers. While I really enjoyed both, I had a special love for Occupational Therapy as a career choice and began working as an occupational therapy practitioner in 2010.
I took my first job as an occupational therapy professional working with older adults. I quickly found myself in meaningful conversations, gleaning wisdom from my client’s life stories and experiences. Out of an overflow of love for this population I would continue working with older adults the remainder of my profession in the corporate world.
A few things that set me apart in the therapy world, was and is, my unique ability to relate to my clients. Additionally, I nurtured that old love and interest I had of being an architect, combined with my social worker mentality to create very strong and unique therapy sessions that would often include facilitating family care plan meetings and Home Assessments.
Over the years, I began to see gaps in services and felt the limitations of red tape. In October of 2019, Medicare rolled out some insurance changes that I did not feel were in the patients best interests and would prohibit me from being able to complete these valuable Home Assessments and thus began the birthing process of Thrive at Home KC.
I have had the privilege of creating my dream job; combining aspects of architecture, social work and occupational therapy to fill these gaps in healthcare by establishing Thrive at Home KC, LLC in July of 2020. The Lord Jesus Christ has led me all the way, giving me ideas and reminding me to “just take a step” I owe Him all the glory and I fully trust in Him and His plans.
I furthered my passion, expertise, and education by becoming a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) and am currently working on my Certified Living in Place Professional (CLIPP) certificate.
At Thrive at Home, we hope to do exactly what the name says, help our clients and their loved ones thrive at home!
